Microsoft unveils its first tablet, the Surface

The Surface appears to be a cross between a tablet and a PC, and Microsoft's challenge now will be to educate the market as to why different is also better. Microsoft Corp put its Surface tablet center stage at its Windows 8 launch event, hoping the sleek new device will spark a fightback against Apple Inc and Google Inc in the exploding mobile computing market.

With interest in traditional computers waning, the world's largest software company is attempting to reinvent the Windows PC in a new format and directly challenge Apple's all-conquering iPad.The Surface is much taller than the iPad since Microsoft used a 10.6-inch screen to accommodate a wider keyboard and to provide more horizontal space for the software. The Surface appears to be a cross between a tablet and a PC, and Microsoft's challenge now will be to educate the market as to why different is also better.

It's twice the amount of storage as a competing tablet for the same price," head of Microsoft's Windows unit, Sinofsky said, comparing the entry level 32 GB Surface with the cheapest 16 GB model of Apple's latest full-sized iPad, which both cost $499.Panos Panay, head of the Surface project, demonstrated the tablet's features, beaming video and music to other screens, showing off the ultra-thin cover that doubles as a keyboard, and hooking up a camera to the device's USB port. He even dropped the device on the floor to demonstrate its durability.

The 10 Types of Social Media Addicts

Social media addiction: a disease likely affecting millions, but one that’s hard to track because it comes in many forms. The afflicted may reveal themselves as serial likers. They may have push notifications set for the most minor of social media updates. They may self-identify as “mavens,” “gurus” or “ninjas.”

But regardless of their appearance, they do walk among us. Of that we can be sure.

The following infographic, which comes by way of the marketing software company Marketo, details 10 of the most common types of social media fiends.

There’s “The Constant Checker,” who can’t go more than a few minutes without looking at his Twitter mentions or Instagram likes. There’s the Klout-obsessed “Self-Proclaimed Influencer.” There’s also the “Multi-Mayor,” who has to check in to a location every time she moves ten feet.

Any of these stereotypes hit a little too close to home? We certainly have to admit some do here. Check out the full infographic below for more. Then let us know in the comments — which of these personalities do you identify with? Are there any you would add?

10 Tips to Keep Your Smartphone's Battery Long Lasting

Since our smartphones seem to be feature-packed and more powerful which provides audio/video playback, access to internet, Global Positioning Systems ( GPS ), Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G connectivity, access to apps and much more that contribute to draining the smartphone's battery. So, here we have collected few tip to keep your battery life of your smart phone last longing.

1. Switch off Mobile:
This is most effective way to keep your mobile battery healthy. If you are not going to use your mobile while sleeping or traveling Turn it off. You can do the same if you are somewhere with no network, specially during no coverage device searching for network and battery consumption will be much higher.

2. Switch off phone's backlight:
The back light is what makes the phone easier to read in bright light or outside. This light also uses battery power.

3. Don't use vibration function:

Usage of animated wallpapers on your device will consume more power and drain the battery faster. Try to turn off the animations on background, instead opt for static backgrounds which will help in reducing the consumption of more power.

9. Remove Unnecessary apps:
If there are several apps running in the background of the device it will rapidly drain the battery. A smartphone is an expert in running multiple tasks at a time. By killing the unnecessary apps you can reduce power consumption.

Verizon iPhone 5 Updated to Fix Wi-Fi Bug

After being treated to unlocked iPhone 5s, Verizon customers got another surprise, albeit this time not a good one — a bug sometimes caused the iPhone 5 to slurp cellular data although it was connected to Wi-Fi.

This was a particularly nasty bug, as it could theoretically rack up expenses on users’ data plans without them knowing. There’s no room for panic, though, as the issue has now been fixed.

Users are advised to go to iPhone’s Settings – General menu, where they can update the device to the latest software version.

To see if everything went OK, check Settings – General – About after restart and scroll down to Carrier, where “Verizon 13.1″ should be displayed.

If Your Android Phone Is Stolen, This App Photographs the Thief

If your Android phone goes missing Kaspersky’s mobile security app may help you not only locate your missing smartphone, but also send you pictures of the phone’s current surroundings.

Through a new web-based control center for the app users can activate a ‘Mugshot’ feature that accesses a lost or stolen phone’s forward-facing camera and captures photos of whatever or whomever might be in front of the lens.

Photos are secretly taken -– so if your phone is with a thief he or she will not know the pics are being taken -– and captured photos can be viewed directly through the app’s web-based control center or emailed to a pre-determined address.

If your phone is stolen, then those photos might potentially show you the thief. If you’ve just misplaced your smartphone, then a photo may help you remember where you left it.

In addition to giving you access to your phone’s camera, the app also allows you to remotely local a missing smartphone from the web interface as well as locate a lost or stolen phone using GPS, GSM or Wi-Fi, and Google Maps. You can also review logs of recent activities on your smartphone, and even find out of the SIM card in the handset has been removed or replaced.

Not just for missing phones, the app also automatically scans apps you download and helps protect your handset from new and emerging viruses, spyware, trojans and bots, and offers real-time protection against dangerous links and webpages, including phishing sites. Antivirus scans and updates can be completed on a schedule or done automatically.

Kaspersky Mobile Security is available now for Android. A 1-year license of the app can be purchased for $14.95 from the Google Play store, and is on sale for $9.99 from Kaspersky’s website (regularly $19.99). If you’re looking for an app to help you find a missing phone, but aren’t concerned about taking pictures or antivirus protection, then Where’s My Droid? can be a less-expensive alternative to the app.

6 Apps You Don't Want to Miss

Field Trip

Google released a new app called Field Trip this week. Working in the background of your Android, the app has cards that pop up on your phone’s screen when it thinks you’re around something interesting. For instance, if you walk by a building downtown, a card might pop up that explains its history. Or, if you’re near a popular restaurant, a card might let you know that there’s tasty food to be eaten inside.

Parking Panda

Parking Panda attempts to make finding your next parking spot a little easier. The app, which is a little pricier than your average parking spot, lets you reserve a space at your destination before you arrive. (No more driving around to look for a space!

Foursquare

Already updated for iOS 6, Foursquare released another iOS update this week, simplifying the design of the app and adding personalized search categories. The map within the app can be toggled so it only displays previously visited places or locations you’ve saved, i.e. places you've added to your “to-see” list for the future.

Zeebox

Zeebox starts as a television channel guide, but quickly becomes much more. Clicking on a listing will bring up a particular show’s page, and connects you to other people watching the same program. Already popular in the UK, the app is now available in the U.S. for iOS devices.

Facebook Messenger for iOS

Facebook updated Messenger for iOS this week. The biggest change you’ll probably notice in the app is a new bubble design for conversations. Other improvements include the ability to see your full contact list by swiping left on the screen, and the ability to add your most-messaged friends to the top of your contact list. Facebook updated the Android version of the app last week.

Bad Piggies

Rovio launched its newest game, Bad Piggies, this week. The next installment of the Angry Birds franchise, Bad Piggies has you play the part of the pigs in the series. In the game you build unique contraptions for your pig to successfully make it through each level.

World's first 24 karat gold plated iPhone 5

Apple's iPhone 5 may be the most sought after phone in the world but for some it does not have enough bling as a Vertu has. For those who love the flashy, Gold Co. of London has created a 24-karat gold-plated iPhone 5.
