Windows 7 Tips and Tricks

1. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Using the mouse, you can drag-”˜n-dock windows to either side of the screen, or drag it to the top to maximize it. These keyboard shortcuts are even faster:
  • Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow dock the window to the left and right side of the screen
  • Win+Up Arrow and Win+Down Arrow maximize and restore/minimize
  • Win+M minimizes everything
  • Alt+Up, Alt+Left Arrow, Alt+Right Arrow navigate to parent folder, or browse Back and Forward through folders in Explorer

You can rearrange icons on the taskbar as you wish and start new (or switch to running) instances of the first ten taskbar programs using Win+1, Win+2, and so on. The cool thing is you can also rearrange system tray icons. Reorder them on the tray or move them outside or back in the tray. Take control of what you want to always keep an eye on, and from which apps you’ll require notifications.

3. Access Jump Lists with the Left Mouse Button

Jump Lists usually show up when you right-click on a taskbar icon. However, they can also be accessed by holding the left mouse button and dragging upwards. If you’re using a laptop touchpad or a touch screen, this is convenient because you do not have to click any button to access a context menu.

Malware on Android: Is it really the problem?

You’ve heard it a thousand times - Android is full of malware, viruses, and who knows what. It is just not secure, you need an antivirus app, just like on Windows, and the list of myths just snowballs from there.

"Damage to the OS" is the keyword when we speak about malware. To understand why they are irrelevant on Android, we have to focus on the way Google built its platform, using a model called sandboxing. In a nutshell, the sandboxing idea is that apps only get a limited “sandbox” where they operate.

Everything out of the sandbox is something apps don’t have access to. This contrasts with the way Windows for example treats apps where they can do everything the user can. That’s not the case on Android (and iOS too). Malicious apps simply won’t be able to access the low-level system files and break your system.

Malware and scaremongering

This does not stop security companies from repeating the malware mantra, though. Earlier in 2012, security company Sophos claimed a game called “The Roar of the Pharaoh” was actually a trojan that could steal your phone number and IMEI. Only slight issue is the app was never on Google Play, but rather on a conveniently unnamed “unofficial download sites.”

McAfee also jumped in on the scare train saying some phones were infected with two new Android viruses in 2011, the NickiSpy and GoldenEagle viruses. Interestingly, later on it was confirmed that the NickiSpy virus was found on between 0 and 49 Android devices. That’s practically zero given the fact that Android grows by 1.3 million devices per day. Most recently, McAfee tried to scare Android users again reporting on malware supposedly increasing by 700% on Android. Truth is, the report never mentions the Google Play store, but rather looks at all kinds of third-party stores and websites. Again, simple common sense would tell you not to download anything from there.

Do anti-virus apps work on Android?

Sandboxing however also means that anti-virus apps are largely useless against malware. Why? For the very same reason - they don’t have access to the low level system files, so they cannot protect them. Remember Google engineer Chris DiBona’s eye-opening Google Plus post. Here is the essence of it:

"Virus companies are playing on your fears to try to sell you bs protection software for Android, RIM and IOS. They are charlatans and scammers."

But anti-virus apps do exist on Android, and question remains what is their function? At best, they will check your existing applications against a list of corrupt third-party apps, but nothing more.

The fact that Android has no malware doesn’t mean it is 100% free of security problems. While the sandboxing model protects your device, it cannot protect you from yourself.

Fake apps and premium texting apps exist

The reality of the situation is that there are generally two types of corrupt applications - rogueware and spyware on one hand, and dialer and texting apps that will hit your phone bill on the other.

Again, if you stick with common sense and don’t install unknown apps from all kinds of suspicious sources, you’d be fine. A universal solution would be not to allow apps from unknown sources on your device. For this, you simply head into settings and disable the ‘Unknown Sources’ option (which should be disabled by default).

The most common problem now seems to be fake apps that would blow up with pop-ups for the few days they are allowed on Google Play. But that’s not really the malware you should be terribly worried about.

To quickly recap, malware on Android is not the issue some want you to believe it is. The sandboxing model keeps your phone safe, and common sense and the Google Play market make it bullet-proof against spyware and other corrupt apps. Everything else boils down to scaremongering and third-partyapp catalogs, and you already know you shouldn't download anything from there, don't you?

Apple iPhone5: Now Available in India

The much awaited iPhone 5 has finally hit stores in India. Apple India partner announced that the iPhone 5 will sell at Rs 45500 (16 GB), Rs 52500 (32 GB) and Rs 59500 (64 GB). The latest iPhone comes as Apple tries to fend off competition that has reached fever-pitch. Google Inc's Android has become the most-used mobile operating system in the world, while key supplier and rival Samsung Electronics has taken the lead in smartphone sales. Here's a look at what makes the new iPhone different from its predecessor

The iPhone5 sports a larger four-inch retina display screen that is 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than its predecessor.

The roomier screen of the iPhone 5, which has 40 per cent more colour saturation, can be used by apps makers to provide most accurate display in the industry.

The iPhone's width is just right for navigating with one's thumb, to make it easy to send text messages, swipe through pages and browse the Web. The additional vertical space on the iPhone 5 screen will let users add a fifth, additional row of apps on the home screen - more room for Web browsing and reading.

The iPhone 5 has chips that support additional bands and frequencies and it's capable of delivering up to 100 Mbps per second.

One popular enhancement was improved battery endurance -- the iPhone 5 can support eight hours of 4G Web browsing.

With the iPhone, it is shipping new 'EarPods' audiophones, designed after digitally scanning hundreds of ears.

Google Data Centers

Google is not the entire internet, but life without Google Search, Gmail, Youtube, Google Maps and other Google products would be hard to imagine. In a first, the search giant has allowed a first look at its eight mammoth data centers that power the Internet. Google provides engineers bicycles to move inside the intricate maze of thousands of servers and miles of cables and pipings.

Street View tour of North Carolina facility which reveals Stormtrooper and R2D2 standing guard.

Different data centers offer different amenities. This conference room, inside our Hamina location, is just outside a sauna area which is available for employees whenever they like.

Steam rises above the cooling towers in The Dalles data center in Oregon. These plumes of water vapor create a quiet mist at dusk.

This family of deer have moved in next to our Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Mike Barham swaps out a motherboard. When server parts break, we first try to repair them. If we cannot, we break them up into raw materials (steel, plastic, copper, etc.) and recycle the components.

A beautiful landscape forms during winter in Finland, as the gulf ices over and creates a picturesque view.

In case anything should happen to our data, we have it all backed up. One of the places we back up information is here in our tape library. Robotic arms (visible at the end of the aisle) assist us in loading and unloading tapes when we need to access them.

Server floors like these require massive space and efficient power to run the full family of Google products for the world. Here in Hamina, Finland, we chose to renovate an old paper mill to take advantage of the building infra- structure as well as its proximity to the Gulf of Finland.

Blue LEDs on this row of servers tell us everything is running smoothly. We use LEDs because they are energy efficient, long lasting and bright.

These colorful pipes are responsible for carrying water in and out of our Oregon data center. The blue pipes supply cold water and the red pipes return the warm water back to be cooled.

Inside our campus network room, routers and switches allow our data centers to talk to each other. The fiber optic networks connecting our sites can run at speeds that are more than 200,000 times faster than a typical home Internet connection. The fiber cables run along the yellow cable trays near the ceiling.
